UMICAD has 4 current certification pathways: Alcohol & Drug Counselor I, II & III (ADC I, ADC II, ADC III) and Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist I (CPRSS I).
ADC I Requirements:
- Passing score on a written test (UMICAD Level I)
- 300 hours of supervised experience performing the domains or 12 core functions,
- 150 hours specialized training
- Education including 6 hours counselor specific ethics.
- A written test (100 questions, multiple choice)
- 3 peer references (ADC I or above, LCSW, LADC working in a treatment setting)
- Supervisor reference and core function form (proof of minimum of 300 hours on the job experience)

- 1 year+ of sobriety
ADC II Requirements:
- Passing score on IC&RC Exam
- 6,000 hours (the equivalent of three years experience within five years prior to application) of experience performing the domains or 12 core functions,
- 270 hours of specialized training and education specific to the domains or 12 core functions,
- Including 6 hours of counselor specific ethics.
- 3 peer references (ADC I or above, LCSW, LADC working in a treatment setting)
- Supervisor reference and core function form (proof of minimum of 300 hours on the job experience)

ADC III Requirements:
- Passing score on IC&RC Exam
- Must have completed all the ADC II requirements
- An additional 4,000 hours of professional experience (for a total of 10,000 hours of work experience)
- Counselors who qualify may apply for ADC III without first becoming ADC II. You, however, must be a I before becoming either a II or a III.
CPRSS I Requirements:
- 46 hour peer recovery training
- Passing score on IC&RC Peer Recovery exam
- 3 peer references (ADC I or above, LCSW, LADC working in a treatment setting)
- 1 supervisor reference and core function form (proof of minimum of 300 hours on the job experience)
